What to Wear to Physical Therapy

By Jose D. HarbinSeptember 5, 2023
What to Wear to Physical Therapy

Wearing appropriate clothing to physical therapy sessions is important for both comfort and treatment effectiveness. The right attire allows your therapist to properly assess movement and enables you to perform exercises without restriction.

General Guidelines for Physical Therapy Attire

Your clothing choices can significantly impact the quality of your therapy session. Here's what you need to know about dressing for success in physical therapy.

Recommended Clothing:

Comfortable, Loose-Fitting Clothes:

Choose clothing that allows for a full range of motion. Athletic wear, yoga pants, shorts, and t-shirts are ideal. Avoid restrictive clothing like tight jeans or dress pants.

Layers:

Wear layers that can be easily removed or added. You may warm up during exercise and cool down during other treatments.

Access to Treatment Area:

If you're receiving treatment for a specific body part, wear clothing that provides easy access. For example, wear shorts for knee therapy or a tank top for shoulder treatment.

Footwear Recommendations:

Supportive Athletic Shoes:

Wear comfortable, supportive sneakers with good traction. Avoid sandals, flip-flops, boots, or dress shoes.

Clean Soles:

Ensure your shoes are clean, especially if you'll be using equipment or lying on treatment tables.

What to Avoid:

  • Jewelry that could get caught on equipment
  • Belts or accessories that restrict movement
  • Skirts or dresses (unless wearing shorts underneath)
  • Heavy perfumes or colognes
  • Clothing with zippers or buttons that could be uncomfortable when lying down

Special Considerations:

For aquatic therapy, bring a swimsuit and towel. For specific conditions, your therapist may recommend specialized clothing or braces. Always communicate with your therapist if you have questions about appropriate attire.
