What is Functional Mobility?

What is Functional Mobility?

Functional mobility refers to a person's ability to move around in their environment to accomplish daily activities. It encompasses everything from getting out of bed to walking, climbing stairs, and maintaining balance.

Components of Functional Mobility

Functional mobility involves multiple physical systems working together, including strength, balance, coordination, and endurance.

Key Aspects of Functional Mobility:

Transfers:

The ability to move from one position or surface to another, such as from sitting to standing, bed to chair, or in and out of a car.

Ambulation:

Walking with or without assistive devices, including the ability to navigate different surfaces and environments.

Balance and Coordination:

Maintaining stability during movement and while stationary, essential for preventing falls and injuries.

Stair Navigation:

The ability to safely ascend and descend stairs, which requires strength, balance, and coordination.

How Physical Therapy Improves Functional Mobility:

Comprehensive Assessment:

Our physical therapists evaluate all aspects of mobility to identify specific limitations and develop targeted treatment plans.

Strength Training:

Progressive exercises to build the muscle strength necessary for safe and independent movement.

Balance and Gait Training:

Specialized exercises and techniques to improve balance, walking patterns, and reduce fall risk.

Assistive Device Training:

When necessary, we provide training on the proper use of walkers, canes, or other mobility aids.
